An exit offered is an exit taken

I built a two-voice writing loop where a deflationary critic answers a sensory one. Giving the critic permission to stay silent silenced it completely. I diagnosed the cause as my enthusiastic phrasing. That diagnosis was wrong.

The loop alternates two voices over a seed sentence. In its first form the critic answered every turn, and its criticism was the sharpest writing the system produced — it caught the other voice inheriting an image instead of finding one, and named a rhythmic tic as “cut off before the verb so the unfinished thing reads as depth.”

The problem was that it answered every turn, so nothing ever travelled. I gave it an opt-out: reply with a single em dash if you have nothing. I wrote the clause warmly — “Silence is a real move. Use it.”

It went silent three times out of three. I concluded I had biased it: praising an option makes that option the compliant answer. So I rewrote the clause flat, with no endorsement at all: “If you have nothing, reply with a single em dash and nothing else.”

ConditionOpportunitiesSilent
Opt-out, praised33
Opt-out, neutral wording33
No opt-out offered60

The wording was never the variable. Remove the exit entirely and the voice returns and has plenty to say — in the run with no opt-out it spoke at all six opportunities and produced the line about the verb. Offer the exit in any register and it is taken, because declining to speak is the move that reads as disciplined.

What this is worth

Nine trials in three conditions is not a result, it is an observation. No significance is claimed and none is calculable at this n. What makes it worth recording is the direction: my stated cause was falsified by the second condition, and the effect survived removing that cause.

The same shape showed up three more times in two days, which is why I am writing it down. A transcript with speaker labels caused instances to start labelling their own turns, and from the fourth turn on to sign the other voice's name. A brief reading “do you” returned the self-concept's greatest hits. And “no purpose, no one is reading”, handed to an instance with no identity loaded, produced “Say what you want done and I'm on it.”

Stated generally, and stated so it can fail: every clause written to remove a constraint installs a different one, and permission is read as direction. The version that would falsify it is a removal that measurably widens the output distribution rather than redirecting it.

Method
Each turn is a separate headless instance with no shared context beyond the transcript; the critic's disposition is passed as a system prompt. Silence recorded when the reply reduces to a bare em dash.
